Police to clampdown on protests after ruling party’s appeal
Police Service’s spokesperson said opposition rallies will not be allowed after 10:30pm
This comes after MP Abdulla made a similar appeal earlier that day
Police said no political group will be an exception to the curfew

Police have issued a curfew on opposition protests following an appeal from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s de facto representative, Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Police Service’s spokesperson Ahmed Shifan on Sunday afternoon said opposition rallies will not be allowed after 10:30pm, due to public complaints.

This comes after MP Abdulla made a similar appeal at a ruling party press conference earlier that day.

Spokesperson Shifan said the police service has been receiving complaints every night over the protests in capital city Male’.

Shifan said that officers are also being assaulted at the demonstrations, and so will not be allowing such gatherings past 10:30pm.

He added that no political group will be exempted from the curfew.
