If Parliament fails to impeach President Muizzu, the public can exercise their own power to do so: former Chief Justice
8 ނޮވެމްބަރު 2026 | އާދީއްތަ 09:11The former Chief Justice has accused the President of abusing his power in violation of the Constitution, asserting that Parliament has failed to fulfill its constitutional duty to initiate impeachment proceedings. He further urged that if Parliament continues to neglect this responsibility, the public should exercise their sovereign power under Article 4 of the Constitution to hold the President accountable.

Former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi has stated that if the Maldives had a responsible parliament representing its people, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu would have already been removed from office or impeached.
In a post on X, Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi stated that the concept of a "no-confidence vote" against the President is not recognized by the Constitution. Dr. Didi further clarified that the constitutional procedure for such a matter is the removal or impeachment of the President, as prescribed under Article 100 of the Constitution.
Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi has stated that it has become commonplace for the President to abuse his powers in violation of the Constitution. He further alleged that the People's Majlis, which is constitutionally mandated to impeach the President under such circumstances, has betrayed both the Constitution and the public by neglecting its constitutional responsibilities.
Furthermore, Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi stated that if Parliament fails to fulfill this responsibility, only one solution remains: the invocation of Article 4 of the Constitution.
Article 4 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives is stipulated under the heading "Sovereignty of the People."
The relevant article stipulates that all powers of the Maldivian State originate from the people and remain vested in them. This provision serves as a guarantee that the Maldivian citizens are the true source of sovereignty and the ultimate holders of all state powers.
Consequently, Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi’s remarks suggest that if Parliament is unable to remove President Muizzu from office, the responsibility then falls upon the public to take action and achieve that outcome.
