Legal expert Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim has called on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to return to the rule of law and distance himself from the Ras Male' land deal, alleging that the government is withholding accurate information regarding the permanent transfer of a significant portion of the project site to Eagle Hills.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Nishan severely criticized the government regarding this issue.
Nishan stated that despite the significant public concern and widespread speculation surrounding the issue, neither government institutions nor President Muizzu have disclosed the facts of the matter. He further noted that under Maldivian law, the President is mandated to provide accurate information to the public.
The projects planned by the government in collaboration with Eagle Hills, along with the processes being undertaken to implement them, are in direct violation of the Maldivian Constitution and established legal frameworks. Furthermore, these actions contravene the international treaties and conventions to which the Maldives is a signatory.Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim
Highlighting the legal principles of contracts, Nishan stated that no agreement is indefinite. He emphasized that the law grants parties the right to terminate or withdraw from an agreement once they exercise their legal authority over the terms.
Furthermore, Nishan stated that if the government continues to ignore these warnings and if the public remains disengaged, future generations will question the actions taken when a portion of Maldivian territory slipped out of the country's control.
Consequently, Nishan called for protests to safeguard the Maldives' sovereignty and to halt the ongoing projects between the government and Eagle Hills.
