Former Member of Parliament for the Maduvvari constituency, Mohamed Ameeth, has stated that Maldivians have never witnessed the country's economic situation fall to such a low level, asserting that the government has proven incapable of overcoming the current crisis.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Ameeth stated that the Maldivian economy has plunged into an unprecedented abyss, reaching its lowest point in recent history.
The Maldivian people have never witnessed the country's economic situation reach such a dire state. We have never seen a time when the citizens have been rendered this vulnerable, nor have we experienced a period where the cost of living has soared to these heights. Even after implementing restrictive laws under the guise of mandatory dollar conversion—attempting to suppress the business community and force their compliance through state power—no viable solution has been achieved.Mohamed Ameeth
Noting that the negative impact is being felt directly by the general public, Ameeth stated that resort employees have seen a significant portion of their salaries deducted.
He noted that many resorts have been forced to switch salary payments from US dollars to Maldivian Rufiyaa. As a result, employees have seen a significant reduction in their take-home pay, placing a heavy financial burden on ordinary families.
Referring to the current economic situation, Ameeth stated that the Economic Minister should resign before the Parliament reaches the point of a no-confidence motion. However, he noted that the government continues to claim the economy is being managed effectively, arguing that their actions are entirely inconsistent with their rhetoric.
Furthermore, Ameeth stated that the MDP had fulfilled its legal obligations in this situation, adding that the party's parliamentary group members had performed vital work in the interest of the public.
