The PNC-majority People's Majlis has rejected a no-confidence motion filed against the Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade, Mohamed Saeed.
In Wednesday's vote, 10 members voted in favor of the no-confidence motion against Saeed, while 54 members voted against it.
The motion submitted by the MDP asserts that Minister Saeed has explicitly violated the Constitution in the performance of his cabinet duties as mandated under Article 132. It further alleges that he has neglected his constitutional obligation to remain accountable to the People’s Majlis, as required by Article 134. Additionally, the motion states that the Minister has engaged in activities prohibited for cabinet members under Article 136 of the Constitution, and as a result, he no longer retains the confidence of the Parliament.
The party has submitted six specific proposals regarding the matter.
Specifically, they highlighted issues such as the continuous surge of the dollar rate on the black market, which has led to an extreme rise in the cost of goods. Furthermore, they noted the failure to responsibly manage state assets and finances, alongside the obstruction of efforts to ensure government accountability to the People's Majlis.
Minister Saeed addressed Parliament on Wednesday to defend himself against a no-confidence motion submitted by 13 members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The opposition has expressed grave concerns over rising public anxiety and the soaring cost of living, pointing out that revenue from bunkering services has fallen significantly short of the government’s initial projections of $400 million. However, the Minister dismissed all allegations during the session, defending the administration's policies and maintaining that the country's economic situation is improving.
