The Fonadhoo Magistrate Court has convicted an individual and ordered the payment of blood money (Dhiya) following a fatal road accident in Laamu Atoll Kadhdhoo that claimed the life of a woman.
The state has filed charges against Mohamed Nausan of Horavila, Laamu Fonadhoo, in connection with this case. He faces two separate counts: performing a negligent act resulting in death and causing bodily harm to an individual.
The incident occurred in August 2025. Mohamed Nausan, who was driving without a valid license, was traveling at high speed on the Laamu Link Road when he struck a woman crossing the street, resulting in a serious accident. The woman passed away while receiving treatment for the critical injuries sustained in the collision.
During the trial proceedings, Nausan pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. He has also entered into a formal plea agreement with the state regarding this case.
The Fonadhoo Magistrate Court ruled that the confession was valid and found the individual guilty of the charges.
In sentencing, the court ordered Nausan to serve nine months and 18 days in prison after finding him guilty of causing physical injury to another person.
Furthermore, he has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of a negligent act resulting in death.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court has ordered the defendant to pay MVR 1 million in blood money (Diyyah) to the legal heirs of the deceased woman, in accordance with Islamic Shari’ah.
The court ruling stipulates that the total amount must be paid in full to the Civil Court within the next 36 months. Additionally, the court has ordered the individual to fast for 60 consecutive days as an act of penance.
