Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has called for political differences to be set aside to halt the Ras Male' project, following the decision to lease a significant portion of the area to a foreign company for 99 years.
Speaking during the "Dhivehinge Bin Dhivehinnah" special coverage, MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem stated that the agreement allegedly granting a significant portion of Ras Male' to Eagle Hills for 99 years is increasingly being exposed for its deep-seated secrecy. He further asserted that the arguments presented by PNC members during the parliamentary debate on this matter were entirely baseless and lacked any substance.
Highlighting the significant difference between leasing a resort for tourism and granting such a vast expanse of land for a long-term period, MP Meekail stated that these claims are being made to deceive the public. He warned that relinquishing over 500 hectares of land in the heart of the Maldives—in a manner that bypasses the country's laws and jurisdiction—would lead to severe social and national consequences.
Furthermore, MP Meekail stated that this is not an issue where political ideologies should take precedence, noting that the consequences will not be limited to a specific party or those who support or oppose the government. He emphasized that the negative impact of this matter will be felt by all Maldivian citizens and will persist for many generations to come.
Some individuals have questioned where the problem lies, pointing out that resorts are also leased out. I truly wonder if they understand the fundamental difference between leasing an island for a resort and this particular arrangement. We must consider the long-term social implications and what will become of the Maldives years from now if we lose control. Imagine more than 500 hectares in the heart of our country where Maldivian law does not apply and our sovereign authority does not reach. We must reflect on the profound changes this would bring to the Maldives. This is not an issue where we should prioritize political ideologies.Meekail Ahmed Naseem
MP Meekail has called on all parties to set aside political differences and unite with sincerity and sound judgment to expose the confidential details of this project and bring it to a halt.
