Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency, has characterized the government-proposed Asset Recovery Bill as a "blackmail bill." The legislation aims to seize illicit financial gains and assets acquired through serious criminal activities and to block avenues for generating further profit from such assets.
During Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, MP Meekail criticized a government-sponsored bill introduced by Central Fuvahmulah constituency MP Ali Fazad, labeling the proposed legislation as a tool designed to blackmail Maldivian entrepreneurs.
Meekail stated that the purpose and intent behind the introduction of this bill are crystal clear to everyone, asserting that it was submitted with the explicit intent of blackmailing those opposed to the government. He further noted that it is evident to all how the administration intends to act once the bill is passed, ratified, and enacted into law.
Meekail stated that considering the timing and circumstances surrounding the bill's introduction, only one thing is clear: it is an evident attempt at blackmail.
This bill is being introduced at a time when a former advisor to the President recently resigned, declaring that he would never invest in the Maldives again. This follows an incident shortly prior, where the nation's top leadership gathered the country's most prominent businessmen for a meeting, only to accuse them of engaging in money laundering. Mr. Speaker, approximately one month after those events, this bill has been brought before the People's Majlis. This is nothing more than a blackmail bill.Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency.
Debating the bill, Meekail further asserted that the government is attempting to suppress the Ras Male' project and silence anyone who speaks out about it. The MP also noted that the government's response to the dollar crisis has been limited to issuing threats against business owners.
The member questioned why the fact that investors are declaring they will no longer invest here is being withheld. Meekail further asserted that this bill is a tool to blackmail Maldivian businessmen, stating that the Parliament has never seen a more preposterous piece of legislation.
Meekail stated that the bill, which allows for the seizure of property without a court verdict, is a violation of fundamental rights.
