9 އޮކްޓޯބަރު 2026 | ހުކުރު 08:47The Criminal Court has ordered the detention of Maahu pending the conclusion of his trial following a dangerous accident on Sosun Magu. Police confirmed they have obtained CCTV footage and witness statements for the investigation into the incident, which occurred while the suspect was allegedly operating a motorcycle without a license and under the influence of intoxicants.

The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that Maahu Hassan, who was arrested in connection with a dangerous accident on Sosun Magu in Malé, was under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the incident.
Police received the report of the accident at approximately 1:12 AM on September 21, 2026. Aminath Mahidha, 26, of Magumatheege, Sh. Foakaidhoo, passed away on September 25, 2026, while undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. In addition to Mahidha, two 22-year-old men were also injured in the incident.
Maahu Hassan, 21, of Asseyri in Th. Digamigili, was arrested under a court order on September 22, 2024, in connection with the accident. He was initially remanded in custody for 15 days. Following the expiration of his initial detention period, the Criminal Court ordered on October 8, 2024, that he be remanded in a custodial facility pending the conclusion of his trial.
While Maahu remains in custody pending the outcome of his trial for a death caused by negligence, the court order stated that sufficient evidence has been obtained to support the allegations against him.
Evidence submitted includes eyewitness testimony from the time of the accident, Mahidha’s death certificate, and medical records detailing the treatment she received following the collision. Furthermore, the submission includes a photo report of CCTV footage snapshots, the official incident report, traffic violation records, and the defendant's criminal history.
Regarding the conditions for detention, the court order stated that, pursuant to Article 49 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Articles 59 and 60 of Law No. 12/2016 (Criminal Procedure Act), the individual poses a potential threat to public safety if released from custody.
The court order stated that the individual had no objections to raise regarding his detention. It further noted that he has a prior criminal record of arrests and detentions.
Furthermore, police stated that Maahu was operating the motorcycle without a valid license and while under the influence of intoxicants.
The court order also stated that the suspect should be transferred to a remand prison once the investigation into the case is concluded.
As police continue their investigation into the incident, there have been previous instances where driving under the influence has led to serious accidents. Recently, the frequency of road accidents in Male' City has seen a significant increase. Furthermore, a major accident in Hulhumale' Phase 2 during the early hours of October 7, 2024, left five people injured. Two of the victims are currently receiving treatment on ventilator support.
