Ibrahim Nazil, the Member of Parliament for South Hithadhoo and Leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group, has stated that one of the primary reasons for the party's defeat in the 2023 presidential election was the narrative surrounding the alleged expulsion of members from the party.
While proposing amendments to the party's constitution at the MDP Congress, Nazil stated that there has always been an internal discourse regarding the influence of other political parties on MDP's internal elections. He noted that the influx and exodus of members from rival parties during election periods significantly impacts and alters the final outcomes.
Nazil stated that an amendment has been proposed to address this issue. Specifically, he has recommended that only individuals who have been registered party members for at least three months be eligible to vote in internal elections.
Nazil stated that during the 2023 MDP presidential primary, serious allegations were leveled against the party's chairperson at the time. Furthermore, Nazil identified this as one of the factors that contributed to the MDP's defeat in the presidential election.
I can state with confidence that the news regarding the removal of approximately 29,000 members from the party, which surfaced so close to the election, was in reality one of the primary reasons for our defeat in the presidential race.Ibrahim Nazil
Nazil stated that such issues arise due to a lack of clear, black-and-white regulations, emphasizing that these matters must be explicitly documented in writing.
