During the "MDP Congress 2026" which commenced on Thursday night, members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) called for the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and expressed strong dissent against the current administration.
A large number of MDP members from across the Maldives participated in the party's 5th National Congress. During the proceedings, as MDP Chairperson President Mohamed Nasheed was delivering his address, many attendees rose with posters displaying various slogans, calling for the resignation of President Muizzu.

Participants at the congress displayed placards primarily calling on the government to end its intimidation of the public. Specifically, they demanded an end to the harassment of fishermen and urged the administration to respect press freedom and cease the intimidation of journalists. Furthermore, participants held signs asserting that they could not be dismissed from their jobs and declaring that, as members of the MDP, they would not be intimidated.

The primary concerns raised by participants at the MDP Congress center on the current administration’s infringement on citizens' rights, its interference with independent institutions and press freedom, and the ongoing creation of job insecurity. In response, participants expressed their firm resolve that the MDP will remain steadfast in its opposition to these actions.
