The Mayor of Thinadhoo City, Saud Ali, has stated that citizens across the Maldives are facing increasing hardship day by day, asserting that the public must stand up to ensure they receive their rightful entitlements.
Speaking on Wednesday night's "Fala Surukhee" program, Saud stated that residents of Thinadhoo, Huvadhu Atoll, Addu, Fuvahmulah, and Boduthiladhunmathi are facing significant hardships. He emphasized that effective governance cannot be achieved through decisions made solely from the comfort of air-conditioned offices. He further asserted that senior government officials and cabinet ministers must personally visit these regions to assess the situation on the ground.
Expressing concern over the government's approach to regional development and resource utilization, Saud stated that there are 150 islands in Huvadhu Atoll alone capable of being developed into resorts. He emphasized that reclaiming lagoons for resort development in only specific regions would fail to benefit the entire country.
Saud stated that regions such as Addu, Kulhudhuffushi, and Fuvahmulah possess natural resources that must be leveraged by establishing urban centers and creating employment opportunities.
Furthermore, Saud noted that there is a sense of apprehension among investors due to the narrowing of investment opportunities.
Highlighting the dire situation currently facing the country, Saud noted that citizens must remain vigilant as certain individuals prioritize personal enrichment and the misappropriation of land. He further emphasized the need to abandon the culture of selling votes for small sums of money during elections.
If we continue to cast our votes for a mere 500, 1,500, or 2,000 Rufiyaa, this nation will never be saved. We, the citizens of the Maldives, must stand up.Saud Ali
Saud stated that if those in political positions truly care for the nation and its citizens, they must focus on developing their islands and regions rather than merely offering praise to leadership. He further called upon all citizens to rise up and establish a system of governance rooted in equality, urging them to break free from such political subservience.
