Dr. Iyaz: Protecting National Sovereignty and Independence Is Every Citizen’s Duty

Prominent religious scholar Dr. Mohamed Iyaz has stated that it is the duty of every citizen to uphold the nation's sovereignty and independence, following the allocation of a significant portion of Maldivian territory to foreign entities by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration.

"Maintaining the nation's sovereignty and independence is a duty incumbent upon every citizen," stated Dr. Iyaz.

In a post on X, Dr. Iyaz stated that the government is obligated to clarify the facts surrounding the long-term leasing of parts of the Maldives to foreign entities. He noted that many are concerned such moves could compromise national sovereignty, amid mounting allegations that there are undisclosed motives behind these agreements.

Dr. Iyaz highlighted that the President had pledged to govern with full transparency and without concealing any matters from the public.

"I urge the President to act in accordance with his promises," Dr. Iyaz stated.

During his campaign, Dr. Muizzu assured the public that his administration would hide nothing from the people and that there would be no secrets. However, as the government approaches its third year, a pattern has emerged where major deals are finalized in secrecy, only to be abruptly disclosed to the public after the fact.

The latest controversy to emerge involves the allocation of 500 hectares of land in Ras Male'—an area reclaimed using public tax funds—to a UAE-based company, Eagle Hills, without the state receiving any financial compensation in return.

A large number of citizens are expressing their concern regarding this matter.
