Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has called for the integration of digital tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance the growth of the tourism industry.
In a message featured in the "Tourism Day Supplement 2026" released to mark this year's International Tourism Day, Minister Ameen highlighted that the theme—"Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism"—is currently the most vital topic for the tourism sector, which serves as the backbone of the Maldivian economy.
Minister Ameen stated that technology has opened new avenues for promoting the Maldives globally and for tourists to plan their travels. He highlighted that, particularly through the use of Artificial Intelligence, the industry now possesses the capability to identify tourist needs and analyze market demand with a level of clarity that was previously unattainable.
Minister Ameen highlighted that digital tools provide guesthouses and small businesses in the Maldives' most remote atolls the same opportunities to reach international markets as large-scale resorts. He further noted that the Ministry aims to leverage modern technology to protect and manage the nation’s fragile environment and coral reefs.
Furthermore, Minister Ameen stated that with the consolidation of tourism and civil aviation under a single ministry, efforts are underway to integrate every stage of the traveler's journey into a unified network. In this regard, he noted that the government is prioritizing the modernization of airports and passenger service systems, while focusing on expanding the benefits of tourism to the northern and southern regions of the Maldives.
Minister Ameen has called for the future of Maldivian tourism to be built upon a foundation that integrates traditional Maldivian hospitality with modern technology.
