President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to travel to Pakistan following a series of controversial and legally questionable incidents that occurred during Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla’s recent visit to the country.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Pakistan this coming October, according to a reliable government source.
Neither the Pakistani nor the Maldivian government has yet disclosed any information regarding this visit.
Ahead of President Muizzu’s upcoming visit to Pakistan, the Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, led a high-level People’s National Congress (PNC) parliamentary delegation on a visit to the country. Although official statements from Pakistan characterized this as an official visit, the scope of the discussions extended far beyond parliamentary cooperation. The delegation engaged in talks covering economic ties, regional relations, defense, technology, aviation, and national security. This broad agenda, transcending traditional legislative diplomacy, has raised significant legal questions regarding the nature and mandate of the visit.
Reliable sources have informed this newspaper that during separate meetings held by Abdul Raheem in Pakistan, several key matters were discussed. These include the possibility of Abdul Raheem contesting the 2028 presidential election on a PNC ticket should President Muizzu be unable to run, as well as securing financial assistance to conduct a third-party election campaign. The sources further revealed that tensions arose during a previous meeting with the Speaker of the Indian Parliament, during which the Maldivian Speaker was reportedly treated with significant disrespect. Additionally, discussions touched upon establishing a regional mechanism within the Commonwealth involving the Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and a proposal for a follow-up meeting between the Speaker and the Pakistani military leadership to be held in a third country.
However, this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Furthermore, reports indicate that during President Muizzu's visit to Pakistan, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is scheduled to be signed to strengthen military cooperation between the two nations. A reliable source, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed this newspaper that discussions are also underway to secure a $50 million loan from Pakistan, with efforts being made to finalize and sign the agreement during this trip. Additionally, agreements are expected to be signed to bolster bilateral ties in sectors such as education and information technology.
