Hanimaadhoo North Harbor Upgrade Stalls at Survey Stage
The Hanimaadhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the lack of progress in repairing the island's northern harbor, noting that despite multiple appeals to the President to expedite the project, only a survey has been conducted to date. As the condition of the aging harbor continues to deteriorate, the council highlighted growing public frustration and a fading hope for a permanent solution due to the sluggish pace of the government's response.

The Hanimaadhoo Island Council has revealed that a survey is the only progress made so far on the repair of the island's northern harbor, two and a half years into President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration.
Speaking to "RaajjeMV" regarding the matter, the Vice President of the Hanimaadhoo Council, Firaq Mohamed, stated that the issue of the island's northern harbor was brought to President Muizzu's attention during one of his initial visits to the islands following his election. Firaq noted that the harbor in question has been in use since the administration of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Firaq stated that during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, a new harbor was constructed on the island, and repairs were made to the northern harbor, including concrete work as requested by the council. However, as the condition of the northern harbor continued to deteriorate, Firaq noted that they requested further repairs from President Muizzu during his visit to the island in 2024.
"We requested President Muizzu to renovate this 30-year-old harbor for us. Upon hearing our request, he immediately instructed the Chief of Staff at Muliaage, Iqbal Adam, to personally oversee the project and ensure that work commences without delay."Firaq Mohamed, Vice President of the Hanimaadhoo Island Council
However, Firaq noted that even when the President visited the island on August 25, 2025, for a foundation-stone laying ceremony, he was informed that the harbor issue remained unresolved. At that time, the President once again assured that the project would proceed.
Firaq further stated that although two and a half years have passed under the current administration, the Ministry's only action was a survey conducted this past June. He noted that due to the sluggish pace of progress, hopes for a permanent solution to the harbor issue are fading.
It has taken two and a half years just to complete the survey. Therefore, one must question whether this harbor will ever be built. At this current pace, there is little hope of achieving a permanent solution.Vice President of Hanimaadhoo Council, Firaq Mohamed
As Hanimaadhoo’s northern harbor serves as a vital hub for both locals and visitors from neighboring islands, the ongoing delays in the project have sparked significant concern among the island's residents and the local council.
