Current administration is unable to maintain existing airports while continuously promising to build new ones: MP Nazil
The opposition MDP has criticized the government for prioritizing the promise of new airports for political gain instead of maintaining and upgrading existing facilities. The party highlighted that new projects are unlikely to be completed within the current term and noted that the failure to maintain existing infrastructure is already causing significant disruptions to ongoing operations.

Ibrahim Nazil, the Member of Parliament for South Hithadhoo and Leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group, has criticized President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, stating that the government continues to propose the construction of entirely new airports while failing to maintain existing ones.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, MP Nazil stated that instead of establishing mechanisms to manage existing issues, the government is focused solely on initiating new projects.
Nazil stated that by the end of this administration's five-year term, it is unlikely that any new airports will have been constructed, adding that the operations of currently functioning airports are also expected to decline.
MP Nazil stated that there are growing complaints regarding the failure to maintain existing airports, leading to their deterioration. He noted that instead of managing these facilities, President Muizzu continues to pledge the construction of new airports for political gain.
There are significant complaints emerging from existing airports regarding the failure to carry out essential maintenance. If these facilities are not properly maintained, they risk falling into complete disrepair and being lost. Furthermore, Nazil noted that contractors must be granted a minimum of two to two-and-a-half years to complete major projects. He emphasized that any new projects initiated within the remaining two years of the current administration's term could not be completed before the end of the tenure.
President Muizzu’s administration is pledging to construct airports in close proximity to one another without regard for the progress of ongoing airport projects. While many members of the public have expressed concern over this direction, economic experts are also urging the government to refrain from proceeding in this manner.
