Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to persist across much of the Maldives on Friday night

The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecasted that various parts of the country will continue to experience rain and thunderstorms through Friday night.
The agency stated that showers are expected across various parts of the country until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday. It further forecasted heavy rainfall for some islands in the northern and central atolls.
According to the Meteorological Service, winds are expected to prevail from the south and southwest in the southern atolls at speeds between 5 and 15 mph. In other regions, winds are forecasted to blow from the southwest and west at speeds of 13 to 23 mph, with gusts potentially reaching approximately 40 mph during squalls.
The weather office stated that while southern waters are expected to be moderate but rough during squalls, seas in other regions will remain generally rough. Wave heights in the south are projected to be between 2 and 4 feet, whereas the northern and central atolls are expected to experience higher swells, ranging from 4 to 7 feet.
Consequently, the authority has urged all parties to remain vigilant regarding the prevailing weather conditions.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures to mitigate potential damage from flooding caused by the ongoing heavy rainfall across various regions of the Maldives.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Police, and local councils are working tirelessly to drain floodwaters from islands affected by the ongoing heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, relevant authorities are actively placing sandbags and implementing additional precautionary measures to prevent floodwaters from entering residential homes, shops, and offices.
