The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that the El Niño phenomenon could trigger a rise in food prices, surge demand for water and energy, and adversely impact the fisheries and tourism sectors. Consequently, the Authority has urged all state institutions to collaborate on proactive contingency measures to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential services.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to remain vigilant regarding the potential risks facing the Maldives due to the El Niño climate phenomenon.

The authority has forecasted that the El Niño phenomenon, which causes significant shifts in global weather patterns and ocean temperatures, could pose substantial economic and social challenges for the Maldives.

According to data released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), food security is one of the sectors most vulnerable to the impacts of El Niño in the Maldives. It is anticipated that the prices of essential commodities—such as rice, vegetables, and cooking oil—could rise, potentially leading to supply shortages. Furthermore, the country is likely to face logistical challenges in importing goods due to shifts in global shipping routes and increasing freight costs.

Regarding the water and energy sectors, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that rising temperatures will drive up water demand, placing increased strain on desalination plants. The NDMA noted that this will lead to higher electricity consumption and, consequently, escalate the costs associated with fuel imports. Furthermore, fluctuations in sea temperatures are expected to adversely impact the fishing industry, potentially shifting the locations of traditional fishing grounds.

The Maldives' tourism industry, the backbone of the nation's economy, is expected to face significant impacts from this situation. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has highlighted potential disruptions to transportation networks and the supply of essential food and water to resorts. Furthermore, with the rising risk of health complications due to extreme heat, the Authority emphasized the importance of proactive measures to ensure the uninterrupted operation of critical infrastructure, such as ports and airports.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has emphasized that preparing for El Niño extends beyond mere weather monitoring, requiring a coordinated effort across all sectors of the state. To ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential services, the Authority has instructed relevant agencies to begin formulating and implementing strategic plans effective immediately.
