While the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) continues efforts to drain flooded streets in the capital, Male', authorities have also issued a specific safety warning regarding drifting timber hazards following a boat capsizing near B. Eydhafushi.
MNDF Southern Area Command has been deployed to assist with flood relief efforts in Addu City, following heavy rainfall that inundated the islands of Hithadhoo, Feydhoo, and Hulhumeedhoo. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged the public to remain vigilant as a wave of severe weather continues to trigger various incidents across the country.
MNDF issued this advisory as the Maldives Meteorological Service forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms across the country from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to 10:00 a.m. Thursday, with heavy downpours expected in some islands. The weather office further noted that winds are expected to prevail from the west and northwest at speeds between 13 to 20 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 40 mph during showers.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of rough seas, with wave heights expected to reach between 5 and 7 feet.
Male' experienced torrential rainfall on Wednesday as heavy storms continue to lash the Maldives.
MNDF Fire and Rescue Service has carried out operations to drain flooded streets in Male' following a period of heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, the MNDF has reported receiving information that a vessel listed approximately 4 nautical miles southeast of Baa Atoll Eydhafushi, causing a load of timber to spill into the sea and drift away.
The debris is projected to be drifting eastward; therefore, mariners traveling through this area are advised to exercise extreme caution. Furthermore, those navigating these waters are urged to remain particularly vigilant during nighttime hours.
