Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has called for the swift conclusion of the trials involving V. Aarashu and R. Fuggiri, as scheduled by the Criminal Court.
Speaking at a gathering held at the People's National Front (PNF) office on Thursday, former President Yameen expressed his desire to put these legal matters behind him, stating there is no reason to prolong the cases. He further remarked that he does not wish for a Supreme Court justice to one day question whether he intends to govern from prison again due to the indefinite protraction of his trials.
President Yameen further stated that the primary witnesses against him are former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath, the key figures behind the massive MMPRC embezzlement scandal. He noted that while both individuals had confessed and were convicted in court, they are now free men. Yameen remarked that no judge could be unaware that the witnesses testifying against him are these two "thieves."
The two biggest thieves are Adeeb and Ziyath. The testimony being used against me comes from these two criminals. The only oral witnesses presented are Adeeb and this person called Ziyath. These are the two individuals who conspired to carry out the MMPRC embezzlement. They confessed in court and were convicted of multiple offenses. Today, Adeeb is a free man. Ziyath is a free man. Yet, I am being prosecuted based solely on the testimony and claims of these two thieves. There isn't a single judge who is unaware of this reality.President Yameen
Furthermore, President Yameen noted that despite the availability of names and photographs of politicians, members of parliament, and others close to Adeeb who benefited from the embezzlement, none of them have been summoned or questioned. He expressed concern that while those individuals remain at liberty in their homes, he continues to be dragged through the courts based solely on the oral testimony of these two individuals.
Former President Yameen stated that he has no objection to the legal proceedings against him. However, he alleged that those involved in money laundering and the high-ranking officials who received funds from the MMPRC scandal are now aligned with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Yameen further noted that although President Muizzu has twice publicly declared his courage to investigate the MMPRC case, there has been no visible progress in the investigation.
