Reliable sources have informed RaajjeMV that authorities attempted to serve a police summons to former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Monday night. According to these sources, police contacted the former president in an effort to deliver the summons; however, he reportedly refused to accept the document.
Police have attempted to serve a summons to former President Yameen regarding comments he made concerning a fire at a government building that housed three state agencies, including the Ministry of Housing. During a rally held by the People's National Front (PNF), Yameen alleged that the fire at the Housing Ministry was an act of arson. He further claimed that the police are aware the incident was carried out by an individual closely associated with President Muizzu.
In response to the allegations made by former President Yameen, Home Minister Ali Ihusaan has instructed the police to clarify the information known to the former president and to investigate any further matters that may require scrutiny. Minister Ihusaan also stated that he has requested the National Integrity Commission to investigate the allegations leveled against the police by President Yameen.
While President Yameen has alleged that the police are aware that a close associate of President Muizzu was responsible for the arson attack at the Housing Ministry, President Muizzu denied these claims during a press conference held on Monday. President Muizzu dismissed the allegations as an absolute lie, asserting that there is no truth to the claims.
Speaking at the People's Majlis, Minister Ihusaan stated that a joint investigation was conducted by the Maldives Police Service and international experts to determine the cause of the fire. Minister Ihusaan further clarified that the investigation revealed the fire was not an act of arson. Instead, the findings confirmed that the incident was caused by an electrical fault.
A fire broke out in December 2024 at the building housing the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Construction, and the Ministry of Environment. The building, which served as the headquarters for all three ministries, was completely destroyed in the blaze.
