Adeeb pays remaining MVR 1 million fine related to MMPRC corruption scandal

Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has settled a fine of one million Rufiyaa owed to the state.

The Criminal Court previously sentenced former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to 20 years in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 2 million after he was found guilty of seven charges related to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.

The state filed a lawsuit to recover one million Rufiyaa that remained unpaid to the government. In a judgment delivered in January last year, the Civil Court noted that Adeeb’s legal team had argued that paying the full amount in a single installment would be difficult. However, as the state refused to grant an extension exceeding one month, the court ordered Adeeb to settle the full payment to the state within a one-month period.

The Civil Court concluded the case on Monday, noting the state's confirmation that Adeeb had settled the full outstanding amount last week. The judgment detailed that Adeeb paid 100,000 Rufiyaa in September last year, followed by the remaining 900,000 Rufiyaa last week.

The MMPRC corruption list includes high-profile politicians and members of various political parties. In this regard, the police have revealed that more than 260 individuals received funds from the embezzlement scheme.

It has been revealed that the list includes 44 members of the 18th People’s Majlis, 16 members of the 19th Majlis, and five individuals serving in independent institutions. Furthermore, the list reportedly contains seven officials from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, six sitting judges, and 23 individuals who held various positions during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, along with seven officers from the security services.
