State elections must transition to a digital voting system: Fuad

The Maldivian Ambassador to Thailand and former President of the Elections Commission, Fuad Thaufeeq, has called for the transition of future state elections to a digital voting system.

In an interview with the media during the People’s National Congress (PNC) convention, Fuad stated that the digital voting system utilized by the party marks an excellent beginning and sets a commendable example.

Fuad stated that obtaining results immediately after voting, without any room for doubt, marks a significant advancement. He further noted that during the morning's proceedings, all results were fully compiled before 12:00 p.m.

In this modern digital era, I believe this is an excellent and comprehensive beginning. Furthermore, I anticipate that various state elections will also be gradually transitioned toward this model in the future.

Furthermore, Fuad stated that while a complete transition may not happen overnight, moving toward such a system through a phased approach would serve as a positive model. He noted that shifting to this voting method would significantly reduce costs and minimize environmental impact.

Fuad highlighted that a digital system would save thousands of ballot papers that are typically discarded after a brief period of use on a single day. He expressed hope that other political parties would follow the path set by the PNC.

In addition to Fuad, senior officials of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration have recently been advocating for a transition to an e-voting system. However, several senior opposition figures and members of the public have raised concerns, alleging that this is a calculated plot by the current administration to manipulate the upcoming presidential election.
