Police accept criminal complaint against EC President over unauthorized removal of PNF members

The Maldives Police Service has officially accepted a case filed by the People’s National Front (PNF) requesting a criminal investigation into the President of the Elections Commission (EC). The party alleges that a significant number of its members were removed from its registry and transferred to other political parties without their knowledge or consent.
In a statement, PNF alleged that a significant number of its members were removed from the party’s registry without their consent. The party claimed this was achieved through the forgery of signatures and the unauthorized use of personal data. The PNF characterized these actions as a serious criminal act of "identity theft," asserting that it constitutes a direct violation of the constitutional right to participate in political activities.
The statement further emphasized that for the head of a commission legally mandated to maintain political party registries and ensure the fair conduct of electoral activities to commit such an act—whether through negligence or intent—poses a significant threat to the democratic system.
The PNF has called upon the police to conduct a swift, impartial, and fully independent investigation into the criminal case submitted. The party further urged authorities to take legal action against all individuals involved in the crime.
While it has been confirmed that the police have accepted the case, no official comment has yet been received from either the Elections Commission or the police regarding the matter.
