Maimoon arrested on suspicion of inciting unrest; Solih and Nasheed call for his release

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and former President and current Chairperson of MDP Mohamed Nasheed, along with other senior leadership figures of the MDP, have called for the immediate release of the party's Youth Wing Vice President, Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed.
In a post on X on Tuesday, former President Solih called for the immediate release of Maimoon. In addition to Solih, former Vice President Faisal Naseem and former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail have also joined the calls for Maimoon's release.
MDP Chairperson Nasheed has stated that the right to assembly is a fundamental right. On Monday night, the MDP National Congress decided to launch a series of protests against President Muizzu's administration.
Maimoon was arrested late Monday night under a court order. Police stated on Tuesday that the arrest followed his alleged attempts to incite unrest and obstruct law enforcement during a protest on Friday night. According to the police, he breached a restricted area by crossing barricades set up to cordone off the street.
Police have previously arrested Maimoon on several occasions. Most recently, he was taken into custody during an MDP protest in April of this year. However, he was subsequently released after being produced in court for a remand hearing.
