Mohamed Shifaz has been appointed as the Deputy Chairperson (Financial) of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
During the MDP National Congress meeting held on Monday night, the party's Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed nominated Shifaz for the position of Deputy Chairperson. Shifaz's appointment to the post was approved with the unanimous support of all 30 members in attendance at the National Council meeting.
The position of Deputy Chairperson (Financial) of the MDP was most recently held by Ahmed Abdulla, the former Member of Parliament for the Baarah constituency. However, he recently resigned from the post. His resignation follows his active involvement in the leadership of Abdulla Shahid’s campaign, after Shahid announced his intention to contest the MDP presidential primary.
Shifaz's appointment as Deputy Chairperson (Financial) of the MDP follows his previous tenure as the party’s Vice President. He had earlier resigned from the MDP amid internal divisions to join The Democrats; however, he rejoined the party in January last year.
Shifaz also served as a Minister at the President's Office during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
