The former president of the MDP, Dr. Ibrahim Didi, has stated that governing the people of the Maldives is not a task that requires being a religious scholar or holding high academic qualifications and PhDs.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program on Sunday night, Didi noted a long-standing narrative regarding the presidency. He stated that during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, it was widely believed that leading the Maldives required either high-level academic qualifications or status as a religious scholar.
However, noting that the reality during the 30-year administration was quite different, Didi stated that although he would not go into specific details, the situation remains clear to the public. He further remarked that being a religious scholar, holding advanced degrees, or possessing a PhD does not equate to the ability to govern the Maldives or ensure that citizens receive their rightful dues.
What I am trying to convey is that ensuring Maldivian citizens receive their rightful share of state benefits and services does not necessarily require one to be a religious scholar, hold advanced academic degrees, or be a PhD holder.Dr. Ibrahim Didi
Furthermore, Didi stated that among those who have governed this country, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stands out as the most politically seasoned and professional leader. He noted that from Thuraakunu in the north to Hulhudhoo in Addu City, the evidence of his service is visible across the nation, demonstrating a commitment to development without discriminating between small and large islands.
Didi highlighted that President Solih’s efforts to address the needs of the Maldivian people and fulfill his pledges remain evident today, even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Didi described the expansion of higher education opportunities for Maldivian youth as a significant achievement of President Solih’s administration, aimed at building an educated generation.
Speaking further, Didi stated that the MDP is the only party dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the Maldivian people and advocating for their rights.
