Hisaan resigns as Vice President of MDP

Hisan Hussain, the former Member of Parliament for the Thulhaadhoo constituency, has resigned from her position as Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
In a letter addressed to MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday, Hisaan stated that under the party’s current charter, the position of Vice President is not one elected through a direct vote of the general membership. Hisaan further noted that the post is an appointed position, filled by the President’s nomination subject to the approval of the National Council.
Hisaan stated that his name was originally proposed for the position by the individual serving as the party's president at the time. He explained that since his role and mandate were intrinsically linked to the mandate of the party president who nominated him, he had decided to resign following the president's departure. Furthermore, Hisaan noted that in adherence to democratic principles and best practices, remaining in the position of vice president without a renewed mandate would be inconsistent with fundamental democratic values.
In her letter, Hisaan announced her resignation from the position of Vice President of the MDP, effective this Thursday. Despite stepping down from the post, Hisaan stated that she will remain a member of the MDP and will continue to work towards the party's progress.
Former President of the MDP, Abdulla Shahid, proposed Hisaan’s name for the position of the party's Vice President. However, Shahid has since resigned from the party's presidency to contest the MDP presidential primary. Hisaan is a key figure actively involved in Shahid's campaign.
