Former President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has stated that he decided to contest the opposition party's presidential primary at the request of many, asserting that the current state of the Maldives does not allow for complacency.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program on Tuesday, Shahid stated that following the MDP's defeat in the 2023 presidential election, numerous party members have urged him to contest the upcoming 2028 presidential election.
Shahid stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration appears to be a directionless government lacking clear policies, describing it as a burden that continues to cause significant distress to the public. He emphasized that this is not a situation that can be ignored, noting that everyone must utilize their experience to work towards bringing the Maldives back on the right track.
This administration is one that lacks any clear direction or policy, inflicting continuous hardships on the public and serving as a catastrophe for the Maldives. We cannot afford to remain indifferent or complacent.Abdulla Shahid
Furthermore, Shahid stated that his decision to contest the MDP presidential primary is driven by the objective of ending the current administration, which he claims has lost its way, and establishing a government that truly serves the aspirations of the Maldivian people.
Shahid announced his bid for the MDP presidential primary during a rally held in Addu City on the night of August 14. Immediately following the announcement of his candidacy for the primary, Shahid resigned from his position as the President of the MDP that same night.
Shahid previously served as the Speaker of the People's Majlis. Following that tenure, he held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. During his term as Foreign Minister, Shahid also served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly.
