The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned Home Minister Ali Ihusaan’s statement declaring that protests will not be permitted on Majeedhee Magu, noting that his remarks contradict previous assertions made by the police.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the MDP stated that police ground commanders had granted permission to hold their scheduled August 13 protest on Majeedhee Magu. However, the Home Minister informed Parliament that the party would not be allowed this opportunity.

The MDP has revealed that during a meeting between the police and members of the party's organizing committee, authorities stated that the protest could only proceed on Majeedhee Magu. The police noted that due to ongoing roadworks on Male's primary thoroughfares, no other routes are currently available for the demonstration.

The MDP stated that after holding the 'Dhathivejje' protest on Majeedhee Magu, they shared concerns with the police regarding the potential lack of sufficient time to conclude the event. In response, police ground commanders reportedly assured the organizers that such issues would not arise this time.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has asserted that peaceful protest is a fundamental pillar of democracy, confirming that they will proceed with their demonstration on Majeedhee Magu in accordance with police guidelines, despite the Home Minister’s remarks that such protests would not be permitted. The MDP further stated that the Minister's refusal to allow the protest demonstrates that the current administration does not respect democratic principles.

The MDP stated that, as the opposition party, it is their responsibility to provide a platform for public sentiment. They explained that Majeedhee Magu was chosen as the protest site to ensure the opportunity for as many people as possible to participate. The party has further called upon the public to join the demonstration in large numbers.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to hold a protest titled 'Dhathivejje' (Hardship) to voice public grievances over the skyrocketing cost of living and the surging dollar rate. The demonstration aims to highlight the significant challenges facing the public and to formally convey these concerns and complaints to the government.
