Shahid announces bid for MDP presidential primary

Abdulla Shahid has resigned from his position as the President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following his announcement to contest the party’s upcoming presidential primary.
During a rally held in Addu City on Friday night, Shahid officially announced his candidacy for the MDP presidential primary. He stated that, in accordance with democratic principles, he does not believe it is appropriate for an individual holding a senior leadership position within the party to contest an internal election or endorse any specific candidate.
With these remarks, Shahid has resigned from his position as the President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Throughout my tenure as the party's president, I have consistently upheld these principles. Accordingly, following the announcement of my candidacy for the MDP presidential primary, I have resigned from the position of party president, effective today.Abdulla Shahid
Shahid stated that he is seeking the support and votes of all general members of the MDP in this endeavor. He assured that he would be a leader for every member of the party, embracing all diverse perspectives, and pledged his commitment to delivering tangible results.
Furthermore, Shahid stated that he would prioritize and protect the national interest and welfare, ensuring a simple and transparent administration that provides fair and equal opportunities for all Maldivian citizens.
Shahid was elected as the President of the MDP without a vote. This followed the opening of nominations for the position in February 2024, where no other candidates came forward to contest. A long-serving member of the MDP, Shahid previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs during the party's most recent administration and also held the prestigious position of President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In addition to Shahid, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former Vice President Faisal Naseem, and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail have also announced their intention to contest the MDP presidential primary.
