MPL admits to deploying female laborers to Thilafushi for cooking duties

While the company maintains that no employees are being coerced into these duties, concerns have mounted over the decision to send staff originally hired for roles in Male' to work at an off-site location.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has admitted that female staff employed as laborers are being sent to Thilafushi to perform cooking duties.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) stated that administrative support staff are being temporarily reassigned to Thilafushi to provide catering services, due to ongoing projects being carried out by the company on the island.
MPL stated that staff are required to travel to Thilafushi for cooking duties only once a week, following a specific schedule. While some employees have alleged they are being forced to perform these duties, MPL has denied the claims, asserting that no staff member has been coerced into the arrangement.
Following discussions with them, it was clarified that there is no requirement for every individual to attend daily. Instead, a schedule has been established where each person is expected to attend approximately once a week. MPL stated that they were compelled to deploy labor staff at this time as their operations were ongoing at the site, making it necessary to find a workable solution.
However, MPL employees working in Malé are expressing their concerns over the numerous challenges they face due to the requirement of being stationed away from their home islands.
