MFDA officials fail to attend container inspections; Health Ministry remains silent on the issue!

Concerns have emerged regarding the absence of Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) officials during the inspection of imported food containers. Due to significant staffing shortages, the authority has reportedly authorized the opening of containers without their direct supervision, raising serious challenges for food safety standards and posing a potential risk to public health.

Concerns have emerged regarding the absence of Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) officials during the inspection of imported food containers, a mandatory procedure required to ensure food safety standards in the country.

An official from Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) informed RaajjeMV that, under standard procedures, officials from Maldives Customs Service, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) must be present when containers carrying food items are opened.

However, he noted that due to staffing shortages, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) is unable to dispatch officials to oversee the opening of containers. He added that they have repeatedly instructed that the process should proceed even in the absence of an MFDA official.

He further noted that this situation has presented significant challenges in monitoring the quality of food items imported into the Maldives.

When contacted by the "Fashaairu" program on Sunday morning for further clarification on the matter, an official from the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) stated that the authority operates under the Ministry of Health and directed all inquiries to the Ministry's media section. However, despite the Ministry's media section failing to answer the calls, the official declined requests to facilitate contact with a senior representative. The official further stated that they had no additional information to provide regarding the issue.

Consequently, an official comment regarding this matter could not be obtained.

While ensuring food safety is a fundamental responsibility of the state, there are growing fears that such negligence could pose a significant threat to public health.
