The President of the Kudahuvadhoo Island Council, Mohamed Saleem, has stated that the government is yet to respond to a letter seeking details regarding efforts to address the island's severe erosion issues.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Mohamed Saleem stated that the area currently experiencing severe erosion in Kudahuvadhoo was previously a large beach. He further noted that the government had been requested to protect the area using geo-bags. However, he added that they have yet to receive any response to the formal letter submitted regarding the matter.
One of the very first actions we took upon assuming office was to submit a formal request for the protection of this site. To this day, we have yet to receive a response to that letter.Mohamed Saleem
Mohamed Saleem stated that former Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim had previously visited Kudahuvadhoo to assess the island's erosion issues. However, he noted that no solution has been reached since that visit.
Mohamed Saleem stated that while the government is amending the law to seize lands under council jurisdiction, it has simultaneously proven incapable of resolving even such minor issues.
Saleem further stated that due to the lack of government assistance, the council is currently undertaking all possible efforts within its own capacity to protect the beach.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining the beauty of Kudahuvadhoo’s beach, Mohamed Saleem noted that the area is a popular destination for numerous surfers and a frequent stop for many safaris.
The area currently experiencing erosion in Kudahuvadhoo is a large artificial beach developed by the previous council term. However, due to a lack of adequate protective measures, a significant portion of this beach has now been washed away.
