Ameen said that Qasim has more ‘responsibility on his hands than President Abdulla Yameen believes’

Ameen Ibrahim, the Jumhooree Party’s deputy leader, has given his guarantee that Qasim Ibrahim will return once his treatment in Singapore is over.

In a tweet sent out on Tuesday in Dhivehi, Ameen said that Qasim has more ‘responsibility on his hands than President Abdulla Yameen believes’ and that he would not ‘just flee’.

The post went on to say that the government has attempted to mar the truth about the situation, which he stresses ‘cannot be done’.

While Qasim has an appointment for an EP (Electrophysiology) study on October 19th, his lawyers said that he has been declared unfit to travel, providing documentation from the airline.

The Maldives Correctional Services had granted Qasim a 10-day period for medical leave on 6th September. Prior to this, the Home Minister had even suggested that Qasim bring in doctors to treat him.

The 10-day period was extended on September 13th, and again on 26th September. Qasim was asked to return to the country by 2nd October.

Qasim was sentenced to three years, two months, and 12 days in prison over the bribery allegations made against him under Section 510 of the Penal Code – on 'bribery and official misconduct' – claiming that he had attempted to influence the authority of a public official.
