Government's intention is not to carry out projects, but to seize people's land: Shujau

Shujau Ali, a member of the MDP's Decentralization Committee, has stated that the government's true intention is not to carry out development projects, but rather to seize land from the people.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Shujau stated that the Decentralization Act, in its current form, does not present any obstacles to the government in implementing development projects. Shujau noted that under the existing provisions of the Decentralization Act, local councils are required to hand over land to the government if it is needed for projects intended for the public interest.

However, Shujau stated that the amendment submitted to Parliament with the intent of land grabbing is not designed to benefit the public. He further alleged that the true purpose of this amendment is to sell off the country's remaining uninhabited islands and lands, allowing the administration to leave office with the proceeds.

This government-backed amendment aimed at seizing land is not being pursued with the sincere intention of benefiting the public or initiating development projects for their welfare. The real objective is to sell off whatever remains of the Maldives before their term concludes. Whether it be uninhabited islands or prime land within the jurisdictions of inhabited islands, their goal is to liquidate these assets and secure the proceeds before leaving office.

Shujau stated that the public will not stand by while the government usurps their powers. He further asserted that the MDP’s Decentralization Committee will take all necessary actions to raise its voice on this issue and ensure the empowerment of the people.

Furthermore, Shujau stated that the MDP will take all necessary measures to highlight the potential negative impacts these amendments could have on local councils.

Shujaau stated that this amendment does not only concern local councils, but is a significant change that will impact the lives of all Maldivian citizens.

Shujau has also urged the public to sign the e-petition currently submitted to the People's Majlis, calling for collective action to pressure the parliament into reconsidering the bill.

This bill proposes an amendment to the Decentralization Act, granting the government the authority to reclaim lands and areas under council jurisdiction for national development projects. Under this amendment, the government would be empowered to remove specific locations from the jurisdiction of a city or island council when they are designated for state-led development initiatives.

The Male' City Council has decided to collaborate with all local councils across the country to mobilize and protest against this amendment.
