The main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has approved a resolution to hold its national congress on September 19.
During the MDP National Congress meeting held on Sunday night, the party's Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed proposed to hold the party's Congress on September 19.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved a motion to hold its congress on Saturday, September 19, with 52 out of 63 members present voting in favor. During the meeting, Anwar Ibrahim, the MDP President for the Thimarafushi constituency, proposed the formation of a committee to oversee the congress proceedings. However, the chair noted that the party's charter does not mandate the establishment of such a committee.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) last convened its national congress in 2022. Although subsequent efforts were made to organize a follow-up session, the party later decided to reschedule the gathering for a future date. The MDP congress serves as a pivotal assembly where the party determines its strategic direction and makes key decisions regarding presidential elections.
