Dumping waste generated in the Male' area into the Boduthiladhunmathi region is an insult to its residents: Shahid

Abdulla Shahid, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has stated that dumping waste generated in the Greater Male' Area into the Boduthiladhunmathi region is an insult to the local residents.

In a post shared on social media, Shahid stated that the Boduthiladhunmathi region is home to a community that embodies the identity of the northern Maldives and is a region eager for development. Given this reality, Shahid remarked that dumping waste from the Male' area onto the pristine islands of Boduthiladhunmathi is a profound injustice, an act of cruelty, and an insult to the region and its people.

Shahid has called on the government to immediately reverse its flawed decision and realign its direction with the will of the people. His remarks come amid opposition to the government's plan to transport waste generated in the Greater Male' Area to the Boduthiladhunmathi region. It is noted that WAMCO has decided to transfer incinerated waste from Thilafushi to HDh. Kunburudhoo. Furthermore, an emergency motion submitted to Parliament on Wednesday highlighting the potential hazards of this move was rejected. The emergency motion was introduced to Parliament by the Member for Vaikaradhoo constituency, Hussain Ziyad.

The motion was rejected by the Parliament with a majority of 27 members voting against it. Only seven members voted in favor of accepting the emergency motion.

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has decided to transport the debris from the fire that broke out in Thilafushi on the 19th of this month to the waste transfer station currently under development in HDh.
