Large-scale removal of trees in Isdhoo reported to EPA; Council clarifies action is part of road construction project!

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched an investigation into the removal of over 500 trees from L. Isdhoo following a formal complaint. While the agency probes the matter, the Isdhoo Island Council has clarified that the trees are being cleared by the Road Development Corporation (RDC) in accordance with established regulations to facilitate an ongoing road construction project.

Concerns have emerged over the large-scale removal and transport of palms and trees from L. Isdhoo.

According to information obtained by RaajjeMV, more than 500 palms and trees have been removed from Isdhoo to date, with reports indicating they are being sold at high prices.

A local source reported that a large number of trees are being cleared, including massive trees that are over 40 years old.

Regarding the matter, Hassan Mohamed, Chief Executive of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), stated that a private individual has reported the large-scale removal of palms and trees from Isdhoo. He further noted that while the issue was reported on Sunday, the agency has requested the complainant to formally submit the case via email.

Hassan stated that the authority will investigate the matter and proceed in accordance with established regulations. He further noted that the council would be the first point of contact to clarify information regarding the issue.

Regarding the matter, Isdhoo Council President Ahmed Hanif stated that the trees are being removed by the Road Development Corporation (RDC) as part of an ongoing road construction project. He clarified that the work is being conducted with the council's authorization and that all tree removals are being carried out in compliance with established regulations and procedures. Furthermore, he noted that advance notice had been provided regarding the removal of trees necessary for the project's progression.

The illegal uprooting and sale of palm trees and plants across various islands in the Maldives has recently become a significant and escalating issue.
