Employees hired for Kulhudhuffushi road redevelopment project continue to receive salaries despite project’s status remaining unknown

The Kulhudhuffushi City Council has expressed serious concerns over the suspension of road construction projects in the city, which has caused significant hardship for local residents.

The second phase of the Kulhudhuffushi City road development project was initiated by the previous administration to provide a permanent solution to the long-standing infrastructure challenges faced by residents. While that phase remains incomplete, the current government has laid the foundation for a third phase, pledging to pave all remaining roads in the city with asphalt.

Kulhudhuffushi City Council informed RaajjeTV that although the second phase of the road construction project commenced during the previous administration, all progress has come to a standstill since the current government took office. The Council noted that this prolonged delay has led to a significant surge in public grievances and complaints being lodged by the city's residents.

The most frequent grievances submitted by residents to the Kulhudhuffushi City Council pertain to the deteriorating condition of the city's roads.

In light of these circumstances, the Council has stated that the second phase of the road development project includes numerous measures to address these issues. The Council further noted that this includes critical work required to resolve the ongoing flooding problems on the streets of Kulhudhuffushi.

However, as the work remains stalled, public concern continues to grow day by day.

Furthermore, the Council highlighted that paving all roads in Kulhudhuffushi City with asphalt is a pledge of this administration, noting that the project's foundation stone was laid in August 2025. However, the project has since come to a standstill, with its current status remaining unclear.

One of the primary concerns highlighted by the Council is that Road Development Corporation (RDC) staff remain mobilized on the island under the guise of the project, despite all work having come to a standstill. The Council stated it is unacceptable that these employees continue to receive their full salaries while no practical work is being carried out on-site.

The deteriorating condition of the roads in Kulhudhuffushi and the subsequent flooding during rainy periods are causing significant disruptions to daily life, leading residents to urgently call for the resumption of stalled development projects. Relevant government authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
