The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that the repair and resurfacing of the final segment of Ameenee Magu, which sustained damage after being completed by the current administration, is scheduled for completion this November.

MTCC commenced physical work on August 3 to repair the western section of Ameenee Magu, where the asphalt has buckled and the road surface has significantly deteriorated. The project to repair Ameenee Magu was officially awarded to MTCC on June 15 of this year.

A section of Ameenee Magu, stretching from Izzudheen Magu to the park near Dharumavantha Hospital, has been closed to traffic as renovation work gets underway. The Ameenee Magu redevelopment project was initiated by the previous MDP administration at a cost of MVR 84.4 million and contracted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC). However, by the end of the previous government's term, asphalt paving had only been completed for 90 percent of the road, with work finalized up to the former Ministry of Housing building.

The final segment of Ameenee Magu, stretching from the former Housing Ministry building to the park near Dharumavantha Hospital, was rapidly paved with asphalt after the previous administration failed to complete the project before its term ended. This specific section recently required reconstruction due to significant surface damage. Technical experts attribute the deterioration to the premature opening of the road to public traffic. According to officials, the asphalt had not been allowed sufficient time to cure and set properly before vehicles were permitted to use the stretch.

Shortly after Ameenee Magu was redeveloped and reopened to public traffic, the road has already sustained damage, necessitating a second round of repairs. This has sparked widespread public criticism directed at the current administration and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

As part of the Ameenee Magu reconstruction project, authorities have scheduled work to strip and resurface the existing asphalt layer, alongside structural modifications to the pavement design at designated bus stops.
