The Naalaafushi Island Council has revealed that the ongoing construction of the island's Fitness and Recreation Center has come to a standstill due to the government's failure to release necessary payments to the contractor.
According to information shared by the Council with RaajjeTV, the Ministry of Sports has contracted the project to MTCC.
MTCC subcontracted the project, which was scheduled for completion within 240 days, to a local contractor from the island. However, the contractor has stated that they are unable to proceed with the work due to non-payment of dues.
The council stated that the government awarded the project to coincide with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to the island.
MTCC has failed to release the payments due for the work completed by the contractor thus far. Consequently, the project has come to a standstill, even as the scheduled completion deadline approaches.
The Naalaafushi Fitness and Recreation Center is a vital project for the local community. Once completed, it will provide the island's youth and residents with modern facilities for sports and leisure activities. However, the project has come to a standstill, and the existing structures are now falling into disrepair.
The Council has called on the Ministry of Sports and MTCC to take urgent action to resolve the ongoing work stoppage caused by non-payment to the contractor. To ensure the project is completed within the designated timeframe, the Council urged the relevant authorities to expedite the outstanding payments due to the contractor.
