While 3,417 vehicles were towed during this period, the most prevalent offenses included driving without a valid license and failure to pay annual fees. Notably, police made over 23,000 phone calls to owners requesting they relocate their vehicles voluntarily before enforcement action was taken to tow them.

The Maldives Police Service has revealed that 51 out of every 100 vehicles inspected over the past six months were issued fines.
On Monday, the police released statistics regarding efforts to ensure road safety in Malé City for the period from January 1, 2026, to June 30, 2026.
Police reported that during this period, traffic officers inspected 21,354 vehicles on the streets of Malé. These inspections resulted in 10,878 fines being issued and 8,740 formal warnings being given.
Over the past 181 days, an average of 118 vehicles were inspected daily, resulting in 60 fines per day. According to the police, approximately 51 out of every 100 vehicles inspected were fined, while the operators of 41 vehicles were issued warnings.
To enforce traffic regulations and ensure public safety, a total of 998 checkpoints were established during this period. Furthermore, 10,263 separate operations were conducted to manage traffic flow, specifically across school zones and major roadways. According to the police, this figures represent a daily average of six checkpoints and 57 traffic management activities.
Regarding efforts to address parking issues, the police stated that they have made a total of 23,608 phone calls to vehicle owners, requesting them to move their vehicles voluntarily instead of having them towed. This amounts to an average of 130 calls per day.
Furthermore, a total of 3,417 vehicles were towed for illegal parking, consisting of 3,336 motorcycles and 81 four-wheeled vehicles.
Furthermore, police stated that 1,080 vehicles were relocated to other areas following official notices issued in connection with various state functions. According to these statistics, the combined total of towed and relocated vehicles has reached 4,497.
Authorities have taken action against 1,052 individuals for driving without a valid license, averaging approximately six offenders per day. Additionally, police reported identifying 71 vehicles operating outside their registered zones and 77 cases of reckless driving. Furthermore, police confirmed that measures were taken against 32 vehicles with illegal modifications, as well as 348 vehicles linked to various ongoing police investigations.
Police stated that the 10,878 fines issued spanned 59 different categories of offenses, with the majority of cases involving expired annual vehicle fees.
Specifically, 2,249 fines were issued regarding annual fee violations, accounting for 20.67% of the total penalties. According to the statistics, 8,611 fines were issued for the top 10 most frequent offenses alone, representing 79.16% of the overall total.
The primary violations leading to fines included unpaid annual fees, expired insurance and roadworthiness certificates, driving without a valid license, and disregarding traffic signs. Additionally, police noted significant penalties were issued for license plate violations, using mobile phones while driving, illegal parking, and breaches of cargo transport and taxi regulations.
