Expansion of Fenaka’s operations has paved the way for job opportunities for Maldivians: Nazil

MP Nazil stated that Fenaka Corporation provided numerous jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure a source of income for Maldivians during the crisis. However, he noted that since the change in administration, projects initiated by the previous MDP government have come to a standstill, leading to a significant escalation in costs.

Ibrahim Nazil, the Member of Parliament for the South Hithadhoo constituency, has stated that the expansion of Fenaka Corporation’s operations has created numerous employment opportunities for Maldivians.

During Monday's parliamentary sitting, MP Nazil spoke during the debate on the Public Accounts Committee's review of the Auditor General's report concerning recruitment, promotions, and remuneration at Fenaka Corporation Limited. He stated that the former MDP administration facilitated numerous job opportunities through Fenaka—particularly for the youth—at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic had paralyzed the tourism industry, leading to widespread job losses and forcing many to relocate back to their home islands.

Nazil stated that the decision to execute projects through Fenaka Corporation rather than outsourcing to private companies was made because the government believed it was the most effective way to boost the national economy and create income opportunities for Maldivian youth. However, he noted that following the change in administration, the projects initiated by the previous government have faced significant hurdles in procurement and implementation, leading to a drastic increase in project costs.

All the materials transported to Addu City for the construction of the central power plant, which serves all the interconnected islands in my constituency, were left idle. Work was halted, yet the staff we had recruited at the time remained employed, and we continued to pay their salaries and manage all related expenses. This prolonged inactivity while maintaining overhead costs is what led to the significant escalation of the project's total cost.
Ibrahim Nazil

Highlighting that the construction of the office building in Hithadhoo has remained stalled since its commencement, Nazil stated that this issue is not unique to Addu City Hithadhoo, but rather reflects the current situation across various islands throughout the Maldives. Given these circumstances, he emphasized that it is crucial for such matters to be documented in audit reports.
