Ibrahim Nazil, the Member of Parliament for South Hithadhoo, has stated that the government overstaffed state-owned enterprises beyond their capacity solely to secure a supermajority for the PNC in the parliamentary elections. He criticized the administration for now abandoning those workers after achieving its political goals, calling the sudden lack of job security for citizens unacceptable.
During Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, MP Nazil expressed concern regarding a circular issued by the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB), which mandates a 33 percent reduction in the workforce of state-owned enterprises.
MP Nazil stated that the government overstaffed state-owned enterprises beyond their capacity solely to secure a supermajority for the PNC in Parliament. He added that it is unacceptable to abandon these citizens, who were previously promised job security, now that the political objective has been achieved.
At that time, the individual was employed elsewhere but was given an assurance that they could return to their home island to be with their family. In exchange for their hard work and commitment, they were granted employment and the opportunity to relocate home. However, with their current dismissal, they are now forced once again to leave their family behind and seek opportunities elsewhere.Ibrahim Nazil
Highlighting that the current administration has left families vulnerable amidst an economic downturn, MP Nazil noted that both the tourism and fishing sectors are currently in decline. He emphasized that terminating 33 percent of the workforce at this juncture would cause significant hardship for between 10,000 and 15,000 families. Furthermore, MP Nazil pointed out that opportunities for new employment within resorts have also become increasingly scarce.
He stated that this action contradicts the government's promises to the people, adding that the public did not vote President Muizzu into office expecting to be placed in such a predicament.
