In the "Haalu Kihineh" program aired by RaajjeTV, several residents from M. Mulaku shared the profound challenges faced by the fishing community and the hardships resulting from the government's failure to fulfill its promises.
A veteran fisherman with 45 years of experience, who is also a supporter of the current administration, expressed deep concerns, alleging that the fishing industry has been neglected since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government assumed office.
Fishermen from Meemu Atoll highlighted that they are facing severe shortages of fuel and ice. Furthermore, it was noted that three Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in the region have broken loose and are out of service. They emphasized that Meemu Atoll has one of the largest fishing fleets in central Maldives, yet Mulaku fishermen are forced to travel all the way to Faafu Nilandhoo to obtain fuel.
The veteran fisherman, despite his political alignment, criticized the government harshly, noting that the long travel distances significantly increase operational costs.
"In reality, fishermen are in a desperate situation. I am a staunch supporter of the PNC and this government, but this mistreatment of fishermen must stop immediately. We are living in extreme hardship,"A fisherman with 45 years of experience.
Another fisherman, also a member of the ruling PNC, stated that he has never witnessed the fishing industry in such a state of decline. He pointed out that the contract to build an ice plant in M. Mulaku was awarded to a company primarily known for selling stationery, expressing doubt that such a company could successfully complete the project.
Additionally, another fisherman accused President Muizzu of attempting to improve the economy by inflating prices and causing public distress. He further claimed that no previous administration had been as dishonest, calling for the immediate resignation of Fisheries Minister Shiyam.
The sentiments expressed by the Mulaku fishermen demonstrate that even those who support the administration have lost hope and are deeply disillusioned. Their accounts highlight what they perceive as systematic neglect of the fishing industry by the government.
