The Maldives Correctional Service has announced that it has conducted interviews with a significant number of eligible inmates who have applied for parole.

The Maldives Correctional Service stated that special meetings of the Parole Board were held at Maafushi Prison on July 11, 2026, to deliberate on pending matters. During the visit, board members also toured the vocational training sites where various rehabilitation programs and courses are conducted for inmates to observe the progress of these initiatives.

The Maldives Correctional Service revealed in March this year that although 241 inmates applied for parole last year, only 27 individuals were granted release.

According to statistics released by the Maldives Correctional Service, a total of 241 parole applications were submitted in 2025.

In this regard, 189 applications met the eligibility criteria, while 43 were disqualified. Maldives Correctional Service stated that eight applications contained incomplete information, and one has been forwarded for legal counsel.

The Maldives Correctional Service has announced that out of the eligible applications received, 42 cases are currently being processed, while 32 cases have been fully completed. Additionally, 86 cases have been submitted to the Parole Board for a final decision. The Service further noted that the Parole Board has approved the release of 42 individuals on parole, while 44 applications were rejected.

Furthermore, Maldives Correctional Service stated that 22 individuals successfully completed their parole period without any violations. Additionally, 25 individuals who were eligible for parole declined to exercise the opportunity.

The Maldives Correctional Service is undertaking extensive efforts to reintegrate inmates back into society. These initiatives include vocational training programs and various educational courses designed to equip them with essential skills. However, the Service noted that certain challenges persist, particularly regarding social and familial hurdles faced by inmates during the reintegration process.

Former Controller Shamaan stripped of certain prison benefits

Following his conviction and sentencing on three criminal charges, Maldives Correctional Service has revoked several special privileges previously afforded to former Controller of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed. Under the "special protection" protocol typically granted to high-ranking former state officials in custody, Shamaan's air-conditioned cell has been dismantled and his family visitation rights have been restricted. These administrative changes follow the court's verdict finding him guilty of robbery, money laundering, and abuse of power.
