Corrections revises policy after reports of Shamaan’s benefit cuts
The Maldives Correctional Service removed the policy on prisoners requiring special protection from its website on Thursday, stating that the guidelines are currently under review and that the agency will now exercise its own discretion in determining who receives such protection. When questioned regarding the matter, the government spokesperson declined to comment, dismissing the issue as insignificant and not requiring a formal response.

Following reports that certain prison benefits were revoked for former Controller of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, the Maldives Correctional Service has removed the policy governing the treatment of inmates and detainees entitled to special protection from its official website.
Regarding the matter, Maldives Correctional Service informed RaajjeMV that the regulations governing the treatment of inmates and detainees designated for special protection are no longer in effect. The agency further stated that the policy was removed from its official website on Thursday.
The Maldives Correctional Service has stated that it is currently reviewing its policies, noting that the agency itself now determines the individuals eligible for allowances under the Special Protection Unit.
The Maldives Correctional Service made these remarks in response to inquiries seeking clarification following reports that some of the benefits and entitlements due to Shamaan in prison had been revoked.
Furthermore, the government spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu), has also refused to provide a comment regarding this matter.
Shareef stated that he had "nothing to say whatsoever" regarding the matter. He added that he would only respond to substantive inquiries, dismissing the issue as non-newsworthy. He further remarked that this was not a question appropriate for a government spokesperson.
