The Chairperson of the MDP and former President, Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that it is now clear that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is unable to resolve the financial challenges facing the Maldives, asserting that the President must now come to the negotiating table.
Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP on Sunday, Nasheed stated that the party has formally requested a meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for discussions. He emphasized that the party remains committed to dialogue and stressed the urgent need for all parties to come to the negotiating table immediately.
Given the current state of the Maldives' financial challenges, it is abundantly clear that this administration is unable to resolve them. It is perfectly evident. The Bank of Maldives simply lacks the necessary funds—specifically dollars and foreign currency. This shortage has left a vast number of citizens deeply concerned. Furthermore, experts and researchers who analyze these economic issues have already sounded the alarm. Therefore, we reiterate that the government must return to the negotiating table.MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed
Nasheed stated that the current administration has failed to secure any foreign currency from international sources. He noted that the government has been unable to raise funds through bond sales, concessional loans, or any other financial instruments. Consequently, Nasheed emphasized that his party continues to urge all stakeholders to return to the negotiating table to address these challenges.
Furthermore, Nasheed noted that the party is independently monitoring the country's financial situation. He stated that internal party committees are currently conducting deliberations on the matter. He also reaffirmed that the MDP remains committed to working tirelessly to ensure ease and relief for the public in these circumstances.
